## Introduction

Sitecore 9's installation is a little different than Sitecore 8. It is
recommended to use the Sitecore Installation Framework, which lets you install the
solution with PowerShell. There are lots of sites and videos that describe how to
set up Sitecore 9 already. This blog will be a quick version or set of notes on how to
set up Sitecore 9. If you want to watch a short YouTube video, I recommend
watching
Install Sitecore 9. The total is about 15 minutes; it starts from setting up IIS, SQL Server 2016
SP1, SQL Server Data Tools 2015, Solr 6.6.2, and using the Sitecore Installation
Framework. I wish I could have watched this video before I started installing Sitecore
9 because I had made a few common mistakes.

The following section will focus on how to set up the local development
environment for Sitecore 9.

## Download Sitecore 9 Package

First, go to dev.sitecore.net to download the package for XP Single.

After extracting the zip file, you'll see the following files. You will probably need to
modify the _.json files, but you won't have to touch the _.zip files.

- Sitecore 9.0.0 rev. 171002 (OnPrem)\_xp0xconnect.scwdp.zip

## IIS Setup

Make sure you have IIS installed on your local machine. The following is a sample
setting for your reference.

## Install SQL Server 2016 SP1

You can go to this
link to download a free version of SQL Server 2016. In this blog, I downloaded the
Developer version.

### SQL Server 2016 Settings

There are a few things you need to modify for SQL Server 2016.

- Change Server Properties' Server authentication from Windows Authentication
  mode to SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode.

## Install Solr 6.6.2

For Sitecore 9.0.0 rev. 171002, it's better to use the Solr 6.x version. I
tried using the 7.x version of Solr but ran into some issues when
trying to create a module on Solr.

## Setup Windows Service for Solr

Download NSSM.

Add NSSM to System Variables' Path.

Since I put my NSSM at the following location, add the path as
C:\Files\nssm-2.24\win64. Once you add the executable path to System
Variables, refresh the command line, and then you can use the NSSM command on the Command
Prompt. Now, type `nssm install solr`. Enter information as
follows:

- Path: C:\solr-6.6.2\bin\solr.cmd

- Startup directory: C:\solr-6.6.2\bin

- Arguments: start -f -p 8983

- Service name: solr

## Enable SSL for Solr

You can read Solr's documentation to set up SSL, but I recommend using this
blog — PowerShell to enable SSL for Solr — as it is much easier. You'll have to
change the Java keytool.exe path to the location on your PC. The following is the script
from "Quickly add SSL to Solr" from kamsar.net.

Once you install the service and enable SSL on Solr, check
the Solr page and make sure the page loads with HTTPS. If the page is
not loading correctly, you'll have to find and fix the issue.

## Run Sitecore Installation Framework

Verify the following before you run the Sitecore Installation Framework:

- Installed IIS

- Installed SQL Server 2016 SP1

- Configured SQL Server 2016

- Installed Solr and enabled SSL on Solr

If everything is correct, you should see your site with the prefix.

## Conclusion

Compared to
how Sitecore 8 was set up via SIM, using PowerShell is a little more complicated since there are things that have to be set
up beforehand. That can lead to some mistakes. So if you install Sitecore
9, I recommend the following:

1. Don't use Solr 7.x; use 6.x instead. For example, this blog uses 6.6.2.

2. Don't use SQL Server 2014 or SQL Server 2014 SP2 if possible, because
   some features don't work. It's better to use SQL Server 2016.

3. If you're new, watch this video before trying.

## Introduction

Installing Sitecore becomes easier by using
**Sitecore Instance Manager**. This article will describe how to
use SIM to install a default Sitecore 8 site. Before we start, the following are a few links about SIM.

## Sitecore Instance Manager Useful Links

6. SIM is open source and hosted on GitHub.

SIM provides great features, such as installing new Sitecore instances, backing up Sitecore
websites, and installing SQL Database and MongoDB. All these features make
Sitecore developers more productive.

## Sitecore Instance Manager Main Features

> List Sitecore websites installed locally and their modules
> Install new Sitecore standalone product
> Install Sitecore modules and packages
> Download Sitecore products from SDN and DEV
> Back up Sitecore websites, and restore them
> Export Sitecore website and import it on a remote computer

## Pre-Requirements for SIM Install

Although SIM is open source, Sitecore is not and is not cheap. Also, a Sitecore
instance is not easy to obtain. You'll have to be a certified Sitecore Developer,
and then you can download it from SDN, the Sitecore Developer Network site.

  - Sitecore Instance

    - In this example, we use Sitecore 8.2. The example file name looks like
this: `Sitecore 8.2 rev. 170614.zip`. Again, if you're a
certified Sitecore developer, you can download it from SDN.

  - Sitecore License

    - You have to purchase a license from Sitecore. I don't think
Sitecore provides a trial license. The license file name looks like this:
`license.xml`

  - SQL Server

    - You'll need SQL Server. In this blog example, I'm using SQL Server
Version 12.0.4237.0.

  - MongoDB

    - You don't have to install MongoDB before SIM installation. You can use SIM
to download and install MongoDB.

  - IIS Manager

    - You'll need this since Sitecore is a web application. SIM will create the site,
application pool, and update the Windows host file once you use Sitecore Instance Manager
to create the site.

Also, this blog sample OS is Windows 10. SIM and Sitecore are not
supported on Mac or Linux, and I'm not sure if they plan to
support them in the future. However, SQL Server 2017 supports Linux, .NET Core is
cross-platform, so something might happen with Sitecore too.

## Setup Sitecore Instance Manager - SIM

### Download SIM via ClickOnce

Download SIM via ClickOnce at
here.

At this point, December 2017, the latest version is 1.5.

### Start SIM Installation Wizard

Just click Next through the first few License Agreement or information screens.

### Instance Root Folder

The Instances Root folder is where you want your Sitecore instance to be
stored. This folder will be your IIS site folder, so make sure your folder
has the appropriate permissions for `NetworkService`.

Local Repository is the location that contains the Sitecore zip file,
`Sitecore 8.2 rev. 170614.zip` for instance. The Sitecore License
file is the path to the Sitecore license.

Make sure the Sitecore IIS site folder has permission for the `Network Service` account.

Enter the SQL Server Name, SQL User Name, and SQL User Password. By default,
the Windows service uses the SQL Server account
**NT SERVICE\MSSQLSERVER**. Change the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)
Windows service to use the Network Service account.

## Conclusion

## Introduction

This blog shows how to enable ASP.NET Bundle & Minification for JavaScript and CSS in Sitecore. The following example is based on these technologies:

  - Sitecore 7.2

  - ASP.NET MVC 5

## Register Bundle to Sitecore - Part 1

For registering the bundle, you need to add the following code.

Note that you don't need to add anything in the Global.asax class to register bundles, as you would with default ASP.NET MVC bundle behavior.

## Register Bundle to Sitecore - Part 2

You need to add the following config file. Any name is fine — Sitecore will pick it up. Let's call it **bundle.config**. Put the file under `{YourAspnetWebSiteFolder}/App_Config/Include/{PutHere}`, or any location where your site loads the Sitecore config.

That's it! You should be able to use ASP.NET Bundle & Minification now as follows:

## Conclusion

Enabling ASP.NET Bundle & Minification in Sitecore requires adding the bundle module to the web.config, creating a bundle registration class, and adding a Sitecore pipeline config file. Once set up, you can use bundles just like in a standard ASP.NET MVC application.
